How to Use Pipe Thread Sealant for the Best Connection

Using a pipe thread sealant for your pipe systems is standard in plant maintenance. Choosing a high-quality sealant will save you headaches and costly repairs down the road.

There are many benefits of using high-quality pipe thread sealants, from leak prevention to easy pipe deconstruction. By the end of this article, you will know how to use pipe thread sealant to get the best connection possible.

How to Use Pipe Thread Sealant

Pipe thread sealant is a surefire way to get a very strong seal between your pipe thread connections so there aren’t any gaps between them that allow liquid or gas to escape. It’s a technology that is ideal for joints, which are considered to be dynamic due to vibration, changing pressures or changing temperatures.

Pipe thread sealants can be used for sealing metal tapered pipe threads and fittings in chemical processing, petroleum refining, pulp/paper, waste treatment, textile and utility plumbing.

Two of the most commonly used methods for sealing metal pipe threads are anaerobic pipe thread sealant and PTFE thread sealant tape.

To apply PTFE thread sealant tape sealant on a pipe, you wrap the male pipe in the direction of the thread tightly. After the threads are completely covered, cut the tape and firmly press on the ends of the thread. Connect the male pipe to the female pipe and use an adjustable wrench to help tighten the pipes. With tape, you need to check for signs of leakage.

If you have to reposition the pipe or reassemble the mated parts, you will need to take off the old tape and reapply new. Backing the threads off each other splinters the tape, thus decreasing the effectiveness of sealing.

Do not use pipe thread tapes on hydraulic lines as fragments and splinters of tape have a tendency to clog hydraulic filtration systems.

For an easier application, use an anaerobic pipe sealant. To apply the anaerobic pipe sealant, on metal pipes only, you first check to see that all grease, oil and surface contaminants are removed from both mated surfaces. Then, smoothly apply the anaerobic paste to mating surfaces and assemble your parts. Handling strength will be achieved within 10 minutes to one hour.

Make sure you have adequate ventilation and are protected from getting any sealant on your skin or clothes.

The Importance of a High-Quality Pipe Thread Sealant

If you are going to use a pipe thread sealant, you need a high-quality product. A high-quality product will prevent many of the leak problems you have and will provide extra strength to your plumbing structure.

High-quality sealants are easy to use, are cost-effective and can be applied quickly. When you compare the expense of replacing broken or leaking pipes to the minor cost of a high quality sealant, it’s an investment that’s well worth the money.

When you use a high-quality pipe thread sealant, you are easily able to deconstruct your pipes if you ever need to move anything. If you don’t use pipe thread sealant, your pipes could rust together, making it impossible to take the pipes apart, meaning you’ll have to replace your entire pipe system.
